Getting Started
What is CloudClarity?
CloudClarity is an Azure Governance Platform created to help you attribute and manage resources in Azure at Scale. It provides a GUI to validate and tag in bulk, as well as providing deep cost analysis tools and cost allocation in real-time. It is an Azure Marketplace SaaS application that can be deployed in an Azure Subscription just any other resource.
How do I create an account with CloudClarity?
To start using CloudClarity you need to deploy it from the Azure Marketplace into your Azure Subscriptionhere.
The process should take no longer than a couple of minutes. You can find more details about our full purchase process on the purchasing process page here.
How do i get billed for CloudClarity
Once CloudClarity is deployed in Azure, any costs are added to your Azure Bill like any other Azure Resource. We don't process any payment information directly. You can find more details on the purchasing page.
Is there a free trial?
We offer one-month free trials. You can start your free trial here.
Is there a free version?
If you cancel a subscription, your account will revert to free mode. Free mode provides some basic functionality like tag analysis. The Dashboard, Cost Analysis and Cost allocation tools will be locked out, however.
I like CloudClarity. Do you have a business case template or procurment information i can forward to my accounting team?
We have a business case template that can be found on the purchasing process page. You can additionally download a Microsoft Word version of the template here
Dashboards
How up-to-date is my cost data on dashboards?
To make sure that your experience is smooth, we update the cost data used on dashboards once every 24 hours. To see the most up-to-date cost data we recommend using the cost summary page. The data on cost summary can be refreshed at the press of a button and provides an in-depth view of resources and tags, as well as prediction data.
Can I set more than one default view on my dashboard?
You can set a default scope at any time by configuring the dashboard with the appropriate scope, tags and values and then clicking the "set current as default".
To set multiple views, configure your view and select "select view" > "save view". This will add views to your account that can be accessed later.
Tag Manager
I can see management groups on Azure portal, but they are not visible in CloudClarity
If you see the message “You are registered as a directory admin but do not have the necessary permissions to access the root management group.” like below in the management group when you navigate in the Azure portal
An Azure AD Global Administrator needs to elevate to the User Access Administrator role of this root group initially. After elevating access, the administrator can assign any Azure role to other directory users or groups to manage the hierarchy. As administrator, you can assign your account as owner of the root management group.
Resolved in the portal:
How to assign a new tag value in the subscription view
In this video, you will see how you can change tags from the subscription detail view. From the tag edit view, we select a new tag value to add and then assign the new value to a few of the resources. We then see the updated breakdown and can see the final results in the table.
How to delete a tag value in the subscription view
In this video, you will see how you can delete tags from the subscription detail view. From the tag delete view, we select a tag value or resource to delete. We then see the updated breakdown and can see the final results in the table.
How to assign a new tag value in the management group view
In this video, you will see how you can change tags from the management group view. From the tag edit view, we select a new tag value to add and then assign the new value to a few of the resources, or a few of the subscriptions. We then see the updated breakdown and can see the final results in the table.
How to edit my tags using a csv file
If you wish to make your tag changes in the form of a csv file we have the functionality to support that. Choose the subscription you wish to download as a csv, then at the top of the list of resources click:
Export To CSV
Once you have made and saved your changes, you can then import the CSV. It is important to note that this functionality will replace the entire table of values with the contents of the CSV so if this is not accurate there will be discrepancies in the tag history.
Once the upload has been completed you have the chance to review before you save and upload the new tags to the system.
Errors may occur if you change values other than tag values.
How to duplicate tag values across resources
In the instance where you have a tag key, for example, "Application Owner" and for most resources, the values are the same for the "Project Owner", you may wish to duplicate all the values under one tag and add them to another value.
The fastest way to do this is to export the table as a CSV. Select the column you wish to duplicate in excel and add it as a new column with the new name.
Saving this CSV file and uploading it will add the new changes to the table and allow you to quickly duplicate an entire set of tags with ease.
Cost Summary
Managing Tags For Cost Summary
In this video, you will see how you can change tag values directly from Cost Summary. From the Cost Summary overview, we allocate untagged resources to the 'costcentre' tag, with value '500'. Once the Cost Summary Overview updates, all the resources are tagged.
I cant see a resource in Cost Summary
We maintain Azures inbuilt Role-Based Access Control to determine access to resources and cost information.
Please Note:
- If you do not have read access to a certain resource you will not be able to view or edit it in Cost Summary
Request your Global Administrator to increase your roles and access to change this.
My Cost Summary data is out of date. and I cannot update it
We maintain Azures inbuilt Role-Based Access Control to determine access to resources and cost information.
Please Note:
- If you do not have write access to a resource you will not be able to update a tag on a resource.
Request your Global Administrator to increase your roles and access to change this.
Cost Summary Live view values are lower than expected
We maintain Azures inbuilt Role-Based Access Control to determine access to resources and cost information.
Please Note:
- If you do not have subscription level access you will be unable to view the historic tag view, and be unable to trigger, or update a cost summary build
Request your Global Administrator to increase your roles and access to change this.
Why is my prediction data displaying N/A on cost management?
If the prediction data is not available there are a few reasons why this may be.
- The first is that it is the beginning of a new month: In this case, we do not have enough data to predict this month, wait a few days and the data prediction should appear.
- The second is that there is no data available from last month: If this is a new resource or if the resource did not cost anything last month, we will not be able to predict the value as the data available is limited. Until the resource has existed for more than a month we cannot predict the value for the data at this time.
- If for any reason you believe that there should be predicted values where there aren't currently, send us some feedback and we will work through this issue with you.
